A fire door can be one of the most visible architectural elements in a scheme – or one of the most compromised. Knowing how to choose fire-rated steel doors means balancing the fire strategy with the proportions, glazing, hardware and everyday use of the space. Get the specification right early, and a slim-framed glazed partition can preserve light and character while delivering the required protection.

The starting point is not the door style. It is the role the opening plays within the building’s fire strategy. A door separating a kitchen from an escape route, a commercial corridor from an office, or a flat entrance from a common area may each require a different performance level. The rating, frame, glazing, seals and ironmongery must then work as one tested doorset.

Start with the required fire rating

Fire ratings describe how long a doorset is designed to perform under test conditions. The number indicates the time in minutes, while the letters explain the type of performance being measured.

An E30 steel door provides integrity for 30 minutes. In practical terms, it is designed to prevent flames and hot gases passing through the assembly for that period. This can be appropriate where the project fire strategy requires integrity but does not require the unexposed face to remain insulated.

An EI30 doorset provides both integrity and insulation for 30 minutes. Alongside containing fire and smoke, it limits temperature rise on the protected side. EI30 is often the more demanding choice where people could be close to the door or where heat transfer is a key concern.

An E60 or EI60 specification extends that period to 60 minutes, depending on the classification. It can be required for higher-risk separations, longer escape strategies or certain commercial settings. A higher rating is not automatically better for every opening. It may affect frame depth, glazing options, weight, hardware and cost, so it should answer a defined project requirement rather than a general preference.

Your architect, fire engineer, approved inspector or building control body should confirm the required classification for the exact location. Do not assume that a nearby door with a familiar FD30 label establishes what is needed for a glazed steel doorset. The applicable requirement depends on the building use, layout, means of escape, compartmentation and approved design.

Choose fire-rated steel doors as complete doorsets

The most common specification mistake is treating the leaf, frame, glass and handles as separate design decisions. A fire-rated door is a tested system. Its rating depends on the exact combination of components and on the permitted dimensions and configuration.

For a glazed steel door, that means the fire-rated glass, glazing beads, setting blocks and steel profiles must be suitable for the stated rating. The same principle applies to hinges, locks, closers, intumescent seals, smoke seals, threshold details and any access-control hardware. A beautiful lever handle or concealed closer cannot simply be substituted after the fact if it falls outside the approved doorset specification.

Ask for clear evidence of the proposed system’s performance, including the relevant fire test or assessment documentation and the scope it covers. The scope matters. A certificate for a single-leaf, solid door does not necessarily support a double door with slim glazed panels, sidelights or an overpanel.

Installation is part of this chain. The fixing method, perimeter gap, fire-stopping material and surrounding wall construction all influence whether the doorset performs as intended. Specify the door with its installation requirements in mind, particularly on refurbishment projects where existing openings can be uneven or made from mixed materials.

Decide how much glazing the fire strategy allows

Steel-framed fire doors are specified because they can do more than close off a room. They retain visual connection between spaces, introduce borrowed light into darker circulation areas and create a precise architectural line. But the amount, position and size of glazing should be led by the tested system rather than by a standard non-fire door design.

A full-height glazed single door may be possible within one system but not another. Double doors, arched heads, side panels and fanlights can each change the available rating or maximum dimensions. The narrowest possible sightline may also involve a trade-off, as fire-rated profiles, glass build-ups and seals need space to perform.

This is where early drawings save time. Share the intended opening size, wall build-up, swing direction and visual reference before a specification is fixed. A specialist can then establish whether the desired composition can be achieved as E30, EI30 or E60, or whether a small adjustment to the grid, frame profile or opening size will make the design viable.

Match the configuration to how the space is used

A rating alone does not make a door appropriate. The configuration must suit circulation, accessibility and the character of the room.

A single hinged door is often the most straightforward fire-rated option for a home office, kitchen separation or internal corridor. It can offer a clean, minimal intervention where the opening is modest. A double-leaf arrangement can make a stronger architectural statement and improve day-to-day movement between larger rooms, but it introduces meeting stiles, coordination between leaves and additional hardware requirements.

For commercial projects, consider traffic levels and door operation from the start. Frequent use may call for closer performance, hold-open arrangements linked to the fire alarm system, panic hardware or access control. These must be compatible with the fire-rated assembly. A door that is regularly wedged open or difficult to operate is not delivering the protection it was specified to provide.

Sliding and pivoting steel doors create impressive interior moments, but they should never be assumed to provide the same fire performance as a hinged fire doorset. If the opening is part of a protected route or compartment line, confirm the proposed operating type is suitable before committing to the design.

Do not overlook smoke control and door closers

Fire is only one part of the risk. Smoke can spread quickly through circulation spaces, particularly in multi-occupancy or commercial buildings. Where required, a doorset may need smoke seals rated for ambient-temperature smoke leakage, often referred to as Sa, or for smoke at elevated temperature, often referred to as S200.

The door closer deserves equal attention. It needs to close the leaf reliably against the frame and seals, without making the door excessively heavy for everyday users. In a premium interior, the closer should be considered as a visible design component or integrated discreetly where the certified system permits. The right answer depends on the rating, leaf weight, glazing area and use pattern.

For doors on escape routes, think through the whole journey. Can occupants open the door easily in the direction of escape where required? Does the selected hardware suit accessibility needs? Will mats, floor finishes or thresholds interfere with the closing action? These are small details on a drawing and major details on site.

Consider internal and external performance separately

Most fire-rated steel doors are used internally, where thermal performance is not the primary issue. External doors face a different set of demands: weather resistance, air tightness, insulation, security, drainage and exposure as well as any fire requirement.

If a door sits on the external envelope, use a system designed for exterior conditions, typically with thermally broken profiles where appropriate. An internal steel system should not be adapted for an exposed external location simply because the design looks right. Condensation, heat loss and durability will quickly undermine the result.

Likewise, specify the finish for its setting. Powder-coated steel can offer a refined, durable finish in a broad range of colours, but high-traffic commercial environments and coastal or exposed conditions may need more careful consideration of coating specification and maintenance.

Ask the questions that protect the specification

Before approving a quotation, make sure the answer is clear on the required fire classification, the evidence supporting the exact configuration, the maximum approved sizes and the included hardware. Confirm whether glazing, seals, closer, lock, threshold and installation guidance form part of the supplied doorset specification.

It is also worth checking the programme. Bespoke fire-rated steel work is made around measured openings and agreed details. Late changes to handle positions, door handing, glass layouts or finished floor levels can affect fabrication and certification.
