A slim-framed steel door can define a hallway, divide an open-plan office or bring light into a protected escape route. But where that opening sits within a fire-resisting wall, the visual brief is only half the job. Fire door certification is what connects the finished door assembly to evidence that it can perform as intended during a fire.

For homeowners, designers and project teams, the key point is straightforward: a fire-rated door is not simply a standard door made from thicker steel or fitted with fire-rated glass. Its performance depends on a tested and controlled combination of frame, leaf, glazing, seals, hardware, fixings and installation details. Change one element without the right supporting evidence and the stated rating may no longer apply.

What fire door certification actually covers

A certified fire door is a system, not a standalone panel. The certification and test evidence should relate to the complete doorset, including the steel frame, door leaf construction, glass type and bead detail, intumescent seals, hinges, lock or latch, closer, threshold and the wall construction into which it is fitted.

This matters particularly with glazed steel doors. The appeal of a steel system often lies in narrow sightlines and generous areas of glass. In a fire-rated setting, however, glass specification, panel sizes, glazing method and steel profile are all carefully controlled. A design that looks nearly identical to a tested arrangement may perform very differently under fire exposure.

Certification is therefore not a decorative label or a generic product claim. It is traceable evidence, usually supported by fire testing, assessment and a defined field of application. It sets out what has been approved, where the system can be used and which variations are permitted.

Test evidence, certification and marking

These terms are related but not interchangeable. A fire test report records the result for a particular specimen tested under defined conditions. An assessment may extend that evidence to specific variations, such as certain dimensions or glazing configurations, where technically justified. Third-party certification adds ongoing production control and auditing around a product or system.

For a project, ask for the evidence relevant to the exact doorset being proposed, rather than accepting a broad statement that a supplier offers “fire doors”. The final package should make clear the rating, system reference, permitted configuration and the obligations for installation and maintenance.

Understanding E30, EI30 and E60 ratings

Fire door classifications can appear technical, but they answer practical questions about performance time and type.

E refers to integrity. An E30 doorset is designed to resist the passage of flames and hot gases for 30 minutes when tested in the relevant orientation and configuration. EI covers integrity plus insulation. An EI30 doorset must also limit temperature rise on the unexposed side for 30 minutes. EI60 provides the same two forms of protection for 60 minutes.

The correct classification is dictated by the building’s fire strategy, the location of the opening, the adjoining spaces and the applicable Building Regulations guidance. A protected corridor, stair enclosure, compartment wall or high-risk commercial area may have different requirements from an internal dividing wall in a private home.

It is tempting to treat a higher number as automatically better. Yet specifying EI60 where E30 is required can affect cost, profile choice, glass proportions, weight and detailing. Conversely, choosing an elegant low-profile system without confirming the required classification can lead to redesign late in the project. The right approach is not to over-specify by instinct, but to align the doorset with the fire strategy from the outset.

Integrity and insulation affect the design

For steel-framed glazed doors, EI ratings can be more demanding than integrity-only ratings. Insulation performance may require different profiles, glass build-ups, seals or limits on panel dimensions. This does not rule out a refined architectural appearance, but it means the desired layout – single or double doors, fixed sidelights, fanlights, arched heads or large glazed fields – must be reviewed against the certified system.

Early coordination preserves more design options. Once the wall opening, finished floor level and ironmongery schedule are fixed, there is less room to adjust without compromising either the appearance or compliance route.

Specify the whole opening, not just the door

A reliable specification starts with the intended use of the opening. Is it part of an escape route? Is it separating a dwelling from a garage, protecting a communal corridor or dividing commercial accommodation? Does it need smoke control, access control, acoustic performance, visibility panels or hold-open functionality?

These requirements can interact. A powered hold-open device may be useful in a busy workplace, but it must release correctly on fire alarm activation. A lock must allow the required means of escape. A closer may be essential to performance, yet its size and position need to suit the door weight and interior design. In some locations, smoke seals are as significant as the fire rating itself.

For bespoke steel doors, provide the proposed opening sizes, wall build-up, handing, swing direction, glazing pattern and hardware expectations before fabrication. Where possible, share the architect’s fire strategy or the relevant schedule with the door specialist. It prevents a quote being based on assumptions that cannot be carried through to installation.

Questions worth resolving before manufacture

The project team should establish the required fire classification, whether smoke leakage control is needed, the substrate and wall construction, and who is responsible for final installation and sign-off. It should also confirm any restrictions on maximum leaf dimensions, glazed panel size, side panels, overpanels and hardware.

Finish choices need consideration too. A powder-coated steel finish can suit a wide range of interiors, but coating processes and site alterations must follow the system’s approved requirements. Drilling extra holes for a last-minute access reader, changing hinges or trimming a leaf on site are not harmless finishing touches on a certified fire doorset.

Installation is part of the certification route

Even a correctly manufactured doorset can lose its intended performance through poor installation. Gaps around the frame, unsuitable packers, incorrect fixings, missing seals, incompatible foam or an unprotected perimeter can all undermine the assembly.

The installer should work to the manufacturer’s instructions and the system evidence for the actual wall type. A masonry opening, metal stud partition and structural steel support may each require different fixing or perimeter-sealing details. The frame must be plumb, square and securely fixed; the leaf must close fully against the seals without binding on the floor or frame.

This is why the term “fire door” should not be used casually for a door leaf supplied without its matching frame and installation detail. A compliant result is achieved by the complete doorset in its final location.

For larger projects, record keeping is valuable. Keep product references, certification documents, installation records, photographs where appropriate and any change approvals together. It makes handover clearer for the client, facilities team, building control process and future maintenance providers.

Inspection and maintenance after handover

Fire-rated doors are active building elements. They must close, latch and seal every time they are needed, often after years of daily use. A beautiful steel door with a damaged closer, cracked glass, worn seals or altered hardware needs attention, regardless of how sound the original specification was.

Routine checks should look for obvious damage, gaps, loose hinges, failed seals, unapproved penetrations and leaves that do not self-close where a closer is required. The frequency depends on the building type, traffic level and fire-risk management arrangements. Communal and commercial settings usually demand more formal inspection and maintenance than a low-traffic private residence, but no fire doorset should be treated as fit-and-forget.

Changes should be controlled with the same care as the original order. Replacing a handle, fitting a hook, adding signage or upgrading access control may affect fire performance. When in doubt, check the system documentation before work is carried out.

Designing with confidence, not compromise

Fire performance and architectural character do not need to pull in opposite directions. Certified E30, EI30 and E60 steel systems can create light-filled divisions while supporting the technical requirements of a carefully considered scheme.
