A glazed partition can transform a dark hallway, open a kitchen to borrowed light or give a workspace clear visual definition. Where that opening sits on a protected route, however, the door cannot be chosen on appearance alone. Fire doors need to hold back fire and smoke for a defined period, while still delivering the slim sightlines and architectural character the project demands.
For premium homes, flat schemes, offices and hospitality interiors, the answer is often a properly tested steel-framed fire door system. The key word is system. The frame, leaf, glass, seals, ironmongery, closer and installation all contribute to the claimed performance.
What a fire door is designed to do
A fire door is a tested door assembly intended to restrict the spread of fire from one area to another. Its role is usually to protect an escape route, compartment a building, or buy occupants and emergency services valuable time. It is not simply a heavier door leaf fitted with a fire-rated label.
When a fire door closes, intumescent seals react to heat and expand to close the gap between the door and frame. Smoke seals may also be required, particularly where smoke control is part of the specification. The door must then remain in position under fire exposure for its stated rating.
This creates a design consideration that is easily missed during early planning. A beautifully detailed steel door with the wrong hinges, untested glazing arrangement or unsuitable handle set may no longer match the evidence supporting the required rating. Fire performance must be designed in from the first drawing, not added after the look has been agreed.
Understanding E30, EI30 and E60 ratings
Ratings describe what a door has been tested to achieve, but the letters matter as much as the number. They should never be treated as interchangeable shorthand.
E: integrity
An E classification relates to integrity. An E30 door is designed to maintain its integrity for 30 minutes, helping prevent flames and hot gases from passing through the assembly. It can be appropriate where the project requirement is specifically for integrity performance.
EI: integrity and insulation
EI adds insulation to the requirement. An EI30 door provides 30 minutes of integrity and limits heat transfer on the unexposed face within the test criteria. EI60 extends that performance period to 60 minutes.
In practical terms, EI classifications can be particularly relevant when a door separates areas where heat transmission is a concern, not only the passage of flame. The right rating depends on the building design, the compartment strategy and the applicable project requirements. A higher number is not automatically better if it is not what the detail, budget or approved design calls for, but a lower rating cannot be substituted for a higher one.
You may also encounter terms such as FD30 and FD60. These are widely used in UK fire-door specification, but they are not a reason to assume direct equivalence with E or EI classifications. Ask for the exact tested classification, the test evidence and confirmation that the proposed configuration meets the project requirement.
Why steel and glazing need careful specification
Steel is valued for its strength, precision and exceptionally slim profiles. It allows a fire-rated door to feel like part of a considered architectural scheme rather than a blank interruption in a glazed screen. A well-proportioned steel system can preserve views through a reception, hallway or commercial fit-out while maintaining the separation the layout requires.
Glazing changes the technical conversation. Fire-resistant glass is not standard toughened or laminated glass, and its permitted pane sizes, aspect ratios, bead details and positioning are governed by the tested system. A large, uninterrupted glazed panel may be possible, but only within the limits of the relevant evidence.
This is where bespoke design needs discipline. Arched heads, double-leaf arrangements, sidelights and decorative divisions can all be compelling, but each variation must be compatible with the tested or assessed construction. The most successful schemes start with the desired visual rhythm, then develop it within the system’s proven parameters.
The components that make the rating credible
A fire-rated door is only as reliable as its smallest specified element. The leaf and frame attract most attention, yet several less visible items determine whether the assembly can perform as intended.
The door closer is one example. Many fire doors must be self-closing so that they are closed when fire occurs. Holding a door open with a wedge, hook or improvised catch defeats its purpose. Where day-to-day circulation requires an open door, a suitable hold-open solution linked to the fire strategy may be considered, subject to the building design and relevant approval.
Hinges, locks, latches, handles, pivots and drop seals also need to be compatible with the door’s test evidence. Even a change made late in the programme for aesthetic reasons can affect the compliant configuration. This does not mean design choice disappears. It means the selected ironmongery should be agreed as part of the complete tested door set.
The frame-to-wall junction matters too. A correctly manufactured door fitted into an unsuitable opening, with inappropriate fixings or gaps around the frame, may not deliver the anticipated performance. Installation should follow the system requirements, with records retained for handover and future inspection.
Choosing fire doors for the space, not just the plan
The best starting point is to identify what the door separates and how people will use it. A protected corridor in a residential development has different priorities from a meeting-room screen, a plant-room entrance or a glazed partition within a private home.
For a design-conscious interior, consider the sightline before selecting the door style. Single doors suit narrower openings and can align elegantly with fixed glazed screens. Double doors create a more generous connection between rooms, but introduce meeting-stile and closing considerations. A steel-framed glazed door may maintain light across a corridor far more effectively than a solid alternative, provided the required fire performance and configuration can be achieved.
Also consider traffic. A busy commercial route may need durable, easy-to-operate ironmongery and controlled closing. In a home, acoustic comfort, privacy, child safety and the way the door feels in daily use can shape the final detail. The fire requirement is fundamental, but it should work alongside these practical needs rather than be treated as a separate package.
Certification, documentation and responsibility
A manufacturer’s fire rating should be supported by appropriate test evidence for the proposed system. For a bespoke steel door, ask what has been tested, what variations are permitted, and whether the exact arrangement of frame, glazing, hardware and dimensions is covered.
Project teams should also establish who is responsible for the specification, installation checks and handover information. On larger schemes, this will involve the architect, fire consultant, principal contractor and building control process. On a renovation, the homeowner may rely on their designer and contractor, but should still retain clear product and installation records.
Requirements can differ across the UK and according to building type, use and location. Building Regulations and related guidance should be applied to the individual project, not copied from a previous job. Where there is any uncertainty, professional fire-safety and building-control advice should be sought before manufacture begins.
A better route from inspiration to specification
Start with the opening size, wall construction, desired layout and target fire rating. Then establish whether you need a single or double door, fixed side panels, a glazed screen, privacy treatment, automatic closing or particular ironmongery. This gives the manufacturer enough information to advise on a viable steel system rather than offering a generic estimate.
It is worth sharing drawings, elevations and photographs of the surrounding interior at quotation stage. The door should relate to nearby windows, joinery, flooring and ceiling lines. A slim black steel frame may be the right choice for one scheme, while a softer finish, different division pattern or more discreet handle profile will better suit another.
