A steel door can be the detail that makes a scheme feel resolved – or the late decision that creates avoidable compromises around openings, thresholds, fire performance and programme. Knowing how to specify steel doors early gives you control over the sightlines, configuration and technical requirements before walls are built and finishes are selected.
The right specification is not simply a choice between black frames and clear glass. It defines where the door sits, how it operates, what it must achieve, and how it will be measured, manufactured and installed. For a renovation, self-build or commercial fit-out, those decisions need to work together.
Start with the door’s job
First establish whether the door is internal, external or part of a fire-rated division. This determines the system before aesthetic choices enter the conversation.
Internal steel doors are usually selected to separate spaces while retaining daylight and visual connection. They work particularly well between a kitchen and reception room, along a hallway, around a home office or as a glazed partition in a workplace. Their slim profiles create definition without making the plan feel closed in. Thermal insulation is not normally relevant here, but safety glazing, acoustic expectations, privacy and everyday durability may be.
External steel doors face a different set of demands. A front or rear elevation needs a thermally broken steel system designed for exposure to weather, temperature changes and security requirements. The frame, glazing, seals, drainage and threshold all matter. A visually similar internal profile is not an external-door solution, so this distinction should be made at concept stage, not after the opening has been formed.
Where a door is required to protect an escape route or separate areas of a building, fire performance becomes the starting point. Specify the required classification – such as E30, EI30 or E60 – from the approved fire strategy and coordinate it with the project’s building control or fire consultant. E relates to integrity, while EI also includes insulation performance. The exact rating, glazing allowance, hardware and installation method must be considered as a tested door assembly rather than selected as separate parts.
How to specify steel doors around the opening
Steel doors are made to measure, but made to measure does not mean every site condition can be solved at installation. Provide the intended structural opening dimensions, wall build-up and finished floor level as early as possible. These inform the frame size, clear passage, threshold detail and available headroom.
For a single hinged door, establish the opening direction and handing. Consider how the leaf will move through the room, whether it conflicts with furniture, and whether it needs to open against a wall. For double doors, decide whether both leaves are used daily or whether one is an occasional opening leaf. That affects the meeting detail, locking arrangement and user experience.
Sliding and pivot doors require more space and more coordination. A sliding system needs a clear parking area beside the opening, while a pivot door requires suitable floor and head conditions for its pivot mechanism. Both can make a dramatic architectural feature, but neither should be chosen purely from an image without confirming how the surrounding structure and circulation will support it.
Ask for dimensions in a clear format: width by height, together with the number of leaves and configuration. It is also helpful to identify whether dimensions refer to the structural opening, the existing aperture or the finished frame size. On refurbishment projects, site measurement after plastering or lining work is often the safest route to a precise fit.
Consider wall depth and junctions
A steel frame is deliberately fine, which makes the junction with the wall highly visible. Confirm whether the frame will sit centrally in the reveal, flush to one face, or align with a finished lining. Brick, plasterboard, timber panelling and tiled returns each create different tolerances and fixing considerations.
For external doors, coordinate the interface with insulation, cavity closers, damp protection and external finishes. At the threshold, resolve drainage, weathering and accessibility before the door is ordered. A low threshold can improve ease of access, but it must be compatible with the exposure level and drainage design of the site.
Choose a configuration that suits the room
The finest steel door does not compensate for a poorly chosen layout. A narrow single door can be elegant in a compact opening, whereas a wide opening may need double doors, a fixed sidelight, or a combination of hinged and fixed glazed panels to maintain balanced proportions.
Think in elevations rather than simply openings. Mullion and transom lines should relate to nearby windows, cabinetry, ceiling heights and architectural axes. A consistent grid creates calm; an intentional asymmetry can work equally well when it responds to how the space is used. Arched steel doors need especially careful setting out, as the arch profile, springing point and divisions will define the character of the whole opening.
Glazing choice also changes the result. Clear glass preserves long views and draws light deep into a plan. Reeded, fluted or obscured glass introduces privacy while still admitting daylight. For bathrooms, bedrooms and meeting rooms, the degree of visual screening should be agreed before manufacture. If the design includes large glazed areas in locations vulnerable to impact, ensure the glass specification meets the relevant safety requirements.
Define performance without over-specifying
A specification should be precise, but it should not add performance requirements that conflict with the design or inflate the budget without a practical benefit.
For external steel doors, ask about thermal performance, glass make-up, weather seals and the intended site exposure. Larger glass panels can bring more daylight and a cleaner appearance, yet they may affect thermal values, weight and handling. South-facing glazing may also need consideration for solar gain, depending on the room and shading strategy.
For internal doors, acoustic separation is often raised after the layout has been agreed. Steel-framed glazed doors can reduce the sense of noise transfer compared with an open opening, but a high acoustic target depends on the complete detail: glass type, perimeter seals, threshold arrangement, gaps and adjacent partition construction. If acoustic privacy is essential, state the required outcome at the enquiry stage.
Fire-rated steel doors deserve the same design attention as non-rated doors, but the tested system sets clear boundaries. Do not assume that a preferred handle, lock, closer, glass pattern or frame division can be substituted later. Certified performance relies on approved components and installation details. The fire-door schedule should identify the rating, required self-closing function where applicable, vision-panel arrangement, hardware and signage requirements.
Specify finish, glazing bars and hardware together
A dark powder-coated finish remains a natural choice for steel, particularly black and deep charcoal tones that emphasise the profile. However, the finish should relate to the wider palette rather than follow a default. Warm bronze, softer greys and bespoke colours can sit beautifully with timber, stone and plaster finishes. Confirm the desired colour reference, sheen level and whether internal and external faces need the same treatment.
Glazing bars should be selected for proportion, not added automatically. More divisions can introduce a classic industrial rhythm, while fewer create a quieter, more contemporary elevation. Consider the view through the door from both sides, particularly where it frames a staircase, garden or feature wall.
Hardware needs equal attention. Handles, hinges, locks, magnetic catches, pull bars and closers change how a door feels in use. A minimal pull handle may suit a pivot or sliding door; a lever handle and latch may be better for a frequently used internal hinged door. For external entrances, agree locking, access control and security requirements at the outset. For fire-rated doors, hardware must be compatible with the certified system.
Allow for manufacture, survey and installation
The most useful steel-door specification includes a realistic sequence. Confirm the design while wall positions and opening sizes can still be adjusted. Arrange a final survey once relevant finishes and floor levels are known, then release the door for manufacture only when the opening is stable.
Installation should be planned around access, finished surfaces and glazing handling. Large units may require clear routes through the property, temporary protection to floors and a coordinated lifting plan. On a busy London renovation, this can be as significant as the door design itself.
