A fire-rated steel door can preserve the slim frames, generous glazing and clean geometry that make a layout feel open. But two doors that appear almost identical on a drawing may perform very differently in a fire. The E30 versus EI30 decision is therefore not a styling choice. It is a question of what the fire strategy requires the door set to contain, and what people on the protected side need to be shielded from.

For homeowners, architects and contractors, the practical distinction is straightforward: both classifications refer to 30 minutes of fire performance, but EI30 adds insulation performance that E30 does not. That extra letter can influence the steel profile, glazing build-up, hardware options, cost and the most appropriate location for the door.

E30 versus EI30: what the letters mean

The number 30 indicates the period, in minutes, for which the tested door set achieved its classification. The letters describe the criteria being assessed.

E30 means integrity for 30 minutes. Integrity is the door set’s ability to resist the passage of flames and hot gases from the fire-exposed side to the unexposed side. An E30 door is designed to maintain a barrier and limit fire spread through the opening for the rated period.

EI30 means integrity and insulation for 30 minutes. Alongside the integrity requirement, the unexposed face must meet prescribed limits for temperature rise during the fire test. In practical terms, EI30 is intended to reduce the heat transmitted through the door set as well as containing flames and hot gases.

This distinction matters most when the side away from the fire needs a higher degree of thermal protection. A door that remains visibly intact can still become extremely hot on its protected face. E30 does not, by itself, demonstrate the insulation performance that EI30 does.

Neither classification should be read as a universal statement about every possible use. The rating applies to a tested and classified construction, not simply to a steel leaf with a fire-rated label. The frame, glazing, intumescent materials, seals, hinges, lockcase, closer, threshold and the supporting wall construction all form part of the result.

Why insulation changes the design conversation

Steel-framed fire doors are often chosen to bring daylight into corridors, entrance lobbies, workspace partitions or open-plan homes without losing definition between rooms. With fire-rated glazing, the visual ambition can remain intact, but the glass specification becomes central to the performance classification.

An E30 glazed system and an EI30 glazed system may share the same design language: narrow sightlines, black steel framing, divided panes or a full-height pivoting appearance. The internal engineering can be markedly different. Insulating fire glass is generally more complex than integrity-only glass, and it can affect pane size, weight, allowable configurations and frame detailing.

That does not mean EI30 is automatically the better product. It is the higher-performing choice only where insulation is required by the fire strategy or where the project team has identified a clear benefit from limiting heat transfer. Selecting EI30 for every opening can add cost and restrict design options without solving a requirement that exists on that particular line of separation.

Conversely, specifying E30 because its appearance or quotation is more attractive can create a late-stage problem if the opening actually requires an insulating fire barrier. Fire performance should be settled before the visual details are finalised, not adjusted after fabrication has begun.

When E30 may be appropriate

E30 is commonly considered where the primary purpose is to preserve compartmentation by resisting fire and smoke movement, while insulation is not stipulated for that location. It may suit certain internal separations, subject to the project’s fire strategy, the building type and the required certification.

For example, a steel glazed screen and door between spaces may need an integrity classification to maintain a protected boundary while retaining borrowed light. Whether E30 is suitable depends on the approved design information, not on whether the screen is internal, residential or commercial. The same type of opening can have a different requirement in another building or even on another floor.

The designer should also look beyond the E classification. Smoke control may be specified as Sa or S200, particularly where the door forms part of a protected route. A self-closing requirement, access control hardware, vision panels, panic furniture and hold-open devices can each affect the certified door-set arrangement.

When EI30 becomes the stronger specification

EI30 is typically the more relevant classification where people, escape routes, adjacent rooms or sensitive assets need protection from heat on the non-fire side for the rated period. It can be particularly valuable where the fire strategy calls for a separating element with both integrity and insulation performance.

The important word is ‘calls’. Requirements are determined by the project fire strategy and applicable Building Regulations, rather than a general rule that one rating applies to a certain room type. In England, Approved Document B may inform the design route, but the correct solution will also depend on the building’s use, height, layout, occupancy and any project-specific fire engineering. Requirements across the UK can differ, so specification teams should confirm the relevant route for the site.

For a premium residential renovation, the issue may arise around a protected circulation space or a conversion with more complex compartmentation. In a commercial scheme, it may arise between areas with different risk profiles, along circulation routes or at a boundary identified by the fire consultant. An EI30 steel system can provide a refined architectural answer, but it must be the exact system approved for that use.

Do not confuse E30, EI30 and FD30

UK projects also use the familiar term FD30. It describes a door with 30-minute fire resistance in a different naming convention and certification context. It should not be assumed to be a direct, interchangeable substitute for E30 or EI30.

The classification standard, test evidence, smoke rating, leaf construction and permitted hardware may all differ. A schedule that says FD30 should be checked against the project’s required evidence before an E30 or EI30 system is selected. The same care applies where drawings abbreviate a fire door rating without identifying the desired smoke control, glazing requirement or opening direction.

This is not paperwork for paperwork’s sake. It prevents a visually correct door being delivered with the wrong performance basis, and it gives the installer a clear route to retain the tested configuration on site.

Specify the whole steel fire door set

A strong specification begins with the opening’s function: what does this barrier need to achieve during the first 30 minutes of a fire? From there, define whether integrity alone is required or whether insulation must be included. The design can then develop around the correct system rather than trying to force a rating onto a preferred door later.

The schedule should identify the classification, any smoke performance, door size, handing, glazing arrangement, finish, locking, access control and closing method. It should also state the wall type or supporting construction where relevant. Large-format doors, double leaves, side screens and overpanels require particular attention because the classification may permit only certain dimensions and combinations.

Ask for evidence that relates to the proposed configuration. A test report or classification document for a small single-leaf door does not automatically cover a tall double door with extensive glazing, an arched head or a side panel. Extended application evidence may be needed to demonstrate that the chosen design remains within the system’s permitted scope.

Installation deserves the same discipline. Gaps around the frame, the specified packing and fixings, perimeter seals, compatible ironmongery and adjustment of the closer are not finishing details. They are performance details. A carefully manufactured fire door can lose its intended rating if it is altered on site or installed outside the certified instructions.

Fire performance without visual compromise

The best time to review E30 versus EI30 is when the plan is still flexible. A clear decision gives the design team room to optimise sightlines, glazing proportions and opening type within the limits of the selected fire system. It also makes quotations more accurate because the door is priced as the certified assembly it needs to be.
